Latent Species
Latent Species is an experimental media art project that integrates generative artificial intelligence and interactive design to explore a central question: Does life have to conform to the biological logic defined by humans?

This project is inspired by xenobiology—the study of life forms that do not conform to the biological structures of Earth or the cognitive frameworks of human understanding. Rather than merely generating images, the project uses AI to simulate a “non-natural evolutionary system” within latent space.
Starting at the microscopic scale of the cell, the project uses a generative adversarial network (StyleGAN2) to produce a series of synthetic cellular forms that do not exist in nature. These “alien cells” possess no biological function, yet within the system, they grow, mutate, and merge—forming a machine-driven model of life. Through gesture-based interaction, viewers are invited to intervene in this system, co-creating unpredictable evolutionary events alongside the AI.
